ADS-B Out Explained: What UK Owners Need to Know

ADS-B Out comes up constantly in UK GA circles, and for good reason — it affects where you can fly, what your aircraft is worth, and how easily it sells. If you’ve been putting off understanding it, here’s the short version.

What it actually is

ADS-B Out means your aircraft continuously broadcasts its position, altitude and identity so that other aircraft and ground stations can see it. It’s already required for controlled airspace above certain levels, and the requirements keep expanding. Unlike a transponder alone, ADS-B Out gives controllers and other pilots a genuinely accurate picture of where you are, which is the whole point.

Why it matters for buyers and sellers

Increasingly, buyers ask about ADS-B fit before anything else — it’s become a basic expectation rather than a bonus feature, much like power steering on a car. An aircraft without it isn’t unsellable, but it will sit longer and attract lower offers, because the buyer knows they’ll need to spend money before the aircraft is as useful to them as a fitted one.

The good news: it doesn’t have to mean a full avionics overhaul

The common assumption is that adding ADS-B Out means ripping out the panel. That’s not always true. If your aircraft already has a compatible transponder, a GPS position source can often be added as a minor modification rather than a full retrofit — which is a much smaller job and a much smaller bill. It’s worth asking your avionics shop specifically about minor-mod options before assuming you need a complete panel upgrade.

What to check before you commit to any option

Confirm the equipment has the right certification for the type of flying you do (VFR versus IFR requirements differ), and check whether your maintenance organisation (LAA, BMAA, or your CAMO) has already assessed and approved the kit for your aircraft type — that can save a lot of paperwork and back-and-forth compared to being the first to fit something new.

Where this fits into a sale

If you’re selling, having ADS-B Out fitted — and saying so clearly in your listing — puts your aircraft ahead of otherwise-similar options on the market. If you’re buying, always ask specifically whether it’s fitted rather than assuming from the panel photos; not every installation is obvious at a glance.

Check ADS-B fit on any listing before you enquire on SkyMarket, or list your own aircraft and make sure your avionics fit is front and centre — create a listing in a few minutes.
